![]() Sondheim met Hal Prince, who would direct many of his shows, at the opening of South Pacific, Hammerstein's musical with Richard Rodgers. The elder Hammerstein became Sondheim's surrogate father, influencing him profoundly and developing his love of musical theatre. When Sondheim was about ten years old (around the time of his parents' divorce), he became friends with James Hammerstein, son of lyricist and playwright Oscar Hammerstein II. Career Mentorship by Oscar Hammerstein II What she did for five years was treat me like dirt, but come on to me at the same time." She once wrote him a letter saying that the "only regret ever had was giving him birth." When his mother died in the spring of 1992, Sondheim did not attend her funeral and had already been estranged from her for nearly 20 years at that point. And she used me the way she used him, to come on to and to berate, beat up on, you see. Sondheim detested his mother, who was said to be psychologically abusive and projected her anger from her failed marriage on her son: "When my father left her, she substituted me for him. No brothers and sisters, no parents, and yet plenty to eat, and friends to play with and a warm bed, you know?" You're in, though it's luxurious, you're in an environment that supplies you with everything but human contact. ![]() Sondheim explained to biographer Secrest that he was "what they call an institutionalized child, meaning one who has no contact with any kind of family. Herbert sought custody of Stephen but was unsuccessful. When Sondheim was ten, his father (already a distant figure) left his mother for another woman (Alicia, with whom he had two sons). "A butler took a duster and brushed it up, tinkling the keys. "The curtain went up and revealed a piano," Sondheim recalled. He traces his interest in theatre to Very Warm for May, a Broadway musical he saw when he was nine. Sondheim spent several summers at Camp Androscoggin. When he lived in New York, Sondheim attended ECFS, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School known simply as "Fieldston.” He later attended the New York Military Academy and George School, a private Quaker preparatory school in Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he wrote his first musical, By George, and from which he graduated in 1946. As the only child of well-to-do parents living in the San Remo on Central Park West, he was described in Meryle Secrest's biography ( Stephen Sondheim: A Life) as an isolated, emotionally-neglected child. The composer grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and, after his parents divorced, on a farm near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. His father manufactured dresses designed by his mother. Sondheim was born into a Jewish family in New York City, the son of Etta Janet ("Foxy," née Fox 1897–1992) and Herbert Sondheim (1895–1966). Cameron Mackintosh has called Sondheim "possibly the greatest lyricist ever." To celebrate his 80th birthday, the former Henry Miller's Theatre was renamed the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on September 15, 2010, and the BBC Proms held a concert in his honor. Sondheim was president of the Dramatists Guild from 1973 to 1981. He wrote five songs for 1990's Dick Tracy, including "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)" by Madonna, which won the Academy Award for Best Song. Sondheim has written film music, contributing "Goodbye for Now" for Warren Beatty's 1981 Reds. ![]() He also wrote the lyrics for West Side Story and Gypsy. He has been described by Frank Rich of The New York Times as "now the greatest and perhaps best-known artist in the American musical theater." His best-known works as composer and lyricist include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd, Merrily We Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, Assassins, and Passion. Sondheim has received an Academy Award, eight Tony Awards (more than any other composer, including a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre), eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. h aɪ m/ born March 22, 1930) is an American composer and lyricist known for more than a half-century of contributions to musical theater.

Back in the early ’90s, he and Brian Henneman from the Bottle Rockets played a few shows in St. He was animated inside, too, playing with such intensity that he inadvertently whacked a microphone with his guitar, producing an audible clunk that the band did its best to mask afterward.įarrar has long counted himself a fan of Sahm’s. Sahm made a memorable entrance, pulling up to the Austin, Texas, recording studio in a vintage Lincoln Continental. (Sahm died of a heart attack in 1999, at 58.)įarrar got to know Sahm when Uncle Tupelo covered his song “Give Back the Key to My Heart” on their 1993 album Anodyne and invited the self-styled Texas Tornado to sing on the track. “Doug came from that generation where that was his social media, just getting on the phone and calling people,” says Farrar, who unearthed the answering machine tapes from some shoeboxes full of old cassettes. Phone calls from Sahm weren’t unusual: Tony Margherita, who managed Farrar’s previous band Uncle Tupelo, says Sahm frequently rang him, too, to talk about baseball. Son Volt bookended Day of the Doug with scratchy snippets of messages that Sahm left on Farrar’s answering machine in the ’90s. Going from psychedelic rock to country and then a heavy blues thing, he kept jumping around the whole time.” “The guy was into so many styles of music it’s too much for most people. “Doug’s an example of why music is interesting, and it’s not about accumulating large amounts of money,” Chadbourne told Magnet magazine in 2002. Sahm has been the subject of three separate tribute albums over the years, starting with respective LPs by jazz/psych guitarist Eugene Chadbourne and roots-rock band the Bottle Rockets in 2002, and rounded out this year with Day of the Doug, a new collection from the alt-country band Son Volt. Maybe that’s what has prompted some of his acolytes to keep alive Sahm’s legacy, a distinctive blend of British Invasion-style pop, psychedelia, country and Tex-Mex. Yet he was always more of a niche taste for those in the know than a household name. Sahm also collaborated here and there in the ’70s with the likes of Bob Dylan, Dr. Sure, the hippie-cowboy singer, songwriter and guitarist landed a handful of songs on the pop charts at his height in the ’60s with the Sir Douglas Quintet, establishing a template that Willie Nelson later used to bring his outlaw country sound to a rock ’n’ roll audience. ![]() Union features long time band members Mark Spencer (piano, organ, acoustic slide, lap steel, backing vocals) Andrew DuPlantis (bass, backing vocals), returning member Chris Frame (guitar), as well as newest member Mark Patterson on drums and percussion.Doug Sahm is one of those musicians whose influence has resonated well beyond the scope of his success. The legacy of Woody Guthrie helped to inform Union’s closing song “The Symbol” which was inspired by Guthrie’s classic “Deportee” (“Plane Wreck at Los Gatos”). ![]() Three songs were tracked at the Mother Jones Museum in Mount Olive, IL and four others were recorded at the Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. “While Rome Burns” emphasizes finding unity during times of turmoil while an album highlight, “Devil May Care,” offers the distraction we need, an effusive tribute to the fun of playing and creating music.Ī unique aspect of Union is that eight of the thirteen songs were recorded at places associated with two figures in American history whom Farrar considers important – labor and community organizer Mary Harris “Mother Jones” and iconic folk hero Woody Guthrie. “What can we do to bring our society back together?” Initially intended to be an entirely political statement, Union morphed into a combination of politically inspired material balanced by a cluster of new songs reflecting the power of love, time and music that sustains us. “There are so many forces driving our country apart,” observes Farrar. Jay Farrar channels folk music’s enduring legacy of the troubadour on Union. Son Volt’s ninth studio album, Union (Transmit Sound/Thirty Tigers), will be released worldwide on March 29th. ![]() The rooms are equipped with pre-World War II window air conditioners, and the two days we were in Gila Bend the temperature was 114 and 115, so in summer expect the a/c to run loudly and continuously, although, to be fair, it does cool the room. It's fun to take pictures of the sign and the outside of the entrance to the lobby, but that about wraps up the grins and giggles. The Space Age Lodge was unpleasantly expensive, and very little of the "Space Age" part ends up inside the rooms. In the future we will probably bypass this location for one that is less expensive and has full disclosure of rates.Through a bizarre chain of circumstances we got stuck in Gila Bend for two nights. I wasn't even sure I had heard the trains at night, but they both confirmed that yes, the trains had been going all night long :( That is the only reason I can't give this place higher marks because I do love a theme hotel, it's just fun and we had fun staying here. My mom and my daughter were much more bothered by the noise. To be honest I'm a pretty heavy sleeper and only noticed one train in the middle of the night. Someone at the front desk told my mom that the trains stopped at 11pm, but that turned out to be false. ![]() I can't say how often they run, but they are only a problem when they blow their horn, which they seem to do with some frequency. If you want to ensure future protection, get big-box-store small diameter conduit and trench it in, then put a pull string inside to make the replacement easier. Compression Connector, Type F Connection, RG 6 Coax Cable, Nickel Plated, 0.260 to 0.280 (Dia) In, Brass Material, 0.02 LB/Ea. Television coaxial cable has no voltage and requires no minimum depth. Move one blade to the side and repeat until you reach your goal. It's common to use a square edge shovel, stomp it into the ground and wiggle it fore and aft to make a v-shaped trench. Polyethylene (PE) dielectric features closed-cell gas expanded foaming technology, with an impressive signal propagation at 87 percent of the speed of light. For trunk and distribution applications, the 75-ohm P3® and QR® coaxial cables are the standard. No need to go all "sprinkler-system" on the trench. With billions of feet of coaxial cables deployed, CommScope is a trusted name. If your cable company charges you to replace a house drop, you can dig your own trench and ask them for a length of coax to replace the entire damaged run. Almost always (can't think of an exception) I've had to return to replace the entire drop. In twenty years of cable television service, I've performed (against company policy) underground splices of house drops. If you've used the correct connectors and good waterproofing, you may get a few months of service from the connection.Īdhesive lined heat shrink tubing provides really good protection, but it has limitations in the underground environment, especially in wet conditions. If you've not used "industry standard" connectors and had insufficient weatherproofing/waterproofing, you can be assured of poor signal (ghosting, snow/pixelation) and a quick demise to the splice. You state that you've spliced it, but did you use coaxial connectors including an F-81 barrel to join the connections?Īs noted in a previous answer, you may not have enough slack to perform a single connection. Typically, the installation puts so many bends into the conduit that friction wins over pulling a new line into the tubing. ![]() ![]() Ostensibly it's been created to protect the cable from digging cuts (and you can see how that worked out) and to allow pulling of replacement coax. ![]() There is a product for cable television installers that meets your description, coax in conduit, although that's a very loose description in my opinion. A bit larger than one-quarter of an inch in diameter. Coaxial cable, or coax is a type of electrical cable consisting of an inner conductor surrounded by a concentric conducting shield, with the two separated. If this is a house drop, the line that runs from the provider's pedestal to the house, it is going to be RG-6 cable most likely. 3 subject notebook has 150 double-sided, college ruled sheets, which fight ink bleed.
